Hotel in Dulov between the Váh, the White Carpathians and village history

Dulov is located in the Váh region of Považie, in the Ilava Basin on the right bank of the Váh. The village’s geographical location connects it with the river landscape, the surrounding hills and several cultural sites whose history reaches into the recent past and older village traditions.

Location

The Tovarský potok, also known as the Tuchynská rieka, flows around Dulov from the west. The Váh, the longest river in Slovakia, forms a small boundary along the area of Dulov. Thus, two different watercourses shape the village’s geographical setting without merging into a single waterway.

Landscape and nature

The northwestern hilly part of Dulov consists of small rocky cliffs made of Mesozoic rock. Deer and wild boar live in the forests of Dulov; in recent years, mouflon have also been present. The northwestern part of the cadastral area of Dulov extends into the Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area.

The local bodies of water include the Sigôtka ponds in Dulov. They were created through gravel extraction on land belonging to the Urbár community for the construction of a motorway. The ponds also form an area for sport fishing, managed according to local fishing regulations.

History and architectural heritage

Historically, Dulov was a typical village of the lesser nobility, owned by several noble families. Traces of the local architectural history can also be seen in the bell towers. The bell tower in the Nová Ves district of Dulov was built in 1922 and originally had an Art Nouveau façade. The newer bell tower in Dulov was built in 1941–1942 as a masonry, prismatic structure of a similar type.

Another distinctive religious building is the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated on 23 September 2000 and has a 17-metre-high tower. Its stained-glass windows depict the Stations of the Cross.

Festivals and running events

A tradition of two festivals developed in Dulov: the church festival in honour of the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary and the festival surrounding the cross on Gálovica, which was blessed on 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The church festival is associated with harvest thanksgiving celebrations.

The Dulovské dožinkové slávnosti celebrate the successful completion of the harvest and help preserve Slovak traditions. Their programme is aimed at all age groups and includes performances by cultural ensembles. In addition to these festivals, the Beh okolo Dulova run is also part of the local event history. It is one of the oldest running competitions in Slovakia; its history dates back to 1971. The run follows an unchanged route through the streets of Dulov and along the adjacent II/507 road.

Regional surroundings

Ostrá Hora is a mountain in the vicinity of Dulov. The wider surrounding region includes Svätá Helena, a church, as well as the mountains of Bulkov, Stupici and Chmelova. These places and landscape features extend the geographical setting beyond the immediate area of Dulov.
