Čachtice between castle ruins, a museum and the Little Carpathians

Čachtice combines impressive testimonies to the past with paths through a varied landscape. At the ruins of Čachtice Castle, remnants of Renaissance stepped gables and fragments of the original painted plaster have been preserved. From the castle, there are views of the surrounding slopes of the Little Carpathians, the Myjava Hills and Považský Inovec.

Nature

Part of the Čachtický hradný vrch National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Čachtice. The reserve is located in the Little Carpathians. The Čachtice Educational Trail provides a specific route through this landscape. The hiking trail is 2.5 kilometres long, has an elevation difference of approximately 40 metres and takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes to walk. There are six stations along the route. The trail is self-guided, can be walked in both directions and is accessible year-round.

Culture

The Čachtice Museum displays historical weapons, documents, clothing and jewellery, portraits, archaeological finds, ceramic vessels and folk-cultural art objects. The collection also includes written and visual material about the meeting of the Tatrín literary society on 9 and 10 August 1847 in Čachtice. The society’s support for a new Slovak written language is also documented. The Čachtice Museum in Draškovičov Manor presents Alžbeta Báthoryová in a historically well-founded portrayal, including through a talking portrait.

History

The Church of St. Ladislav in Čachtice, dedicated to Saint Ladislaus, was built in 1390 by Duke Ctibor I as an originally Gothic church. In 1680, it was rebuilt, extended and given a Baroque makeover. Its furnishings include a late-Baroque organ and a Baroque side door dating from 1661. The church stands within a stone fortification with loopholes and three entrances. Another notable architectural element is a stone arched bridge with a parish staircase and a portal dating from 1697.

A museum was established in Draškovičov Manor in the 1960s; today, the manor house is a branch of the Trenčín Museum. After extensive reconstruction, Draškovičov Manor was reopened to the public. The exhibition includes a holographic theatre. There is also a replica of a blacksmith’s workshop, where a blacksmith addresses visitors via a digital screen and involves them in a conversation about his work.

Park and access

The historic park garden of Draškovičov Manor in Čachtice was ceremonially opened to the public on 22 August 2026. It provides space for recreation, culture, education and social activities. The network of paths in the revitalised historic park garden was designed to make access to the manor house easier for people with reduced mobility and other health impairments.
