Omšenie: Hotels amid mountain nature and culture

Omšenie is a mountain municipality in the southwest of the Strážovské vrchy. The Teplička stream flows through the village. Rocky habitats, mountain streams, historic churches, and marked trails create a diverse picture of this Slovak locality.

Nature and landscape

Above Omšenie, on the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy, lies the Omšenská Baba nature reserve. Its distinctive carbonate rock is accompanied by rock, forest, and wetland communities. In the rocky habitats, Pulsatilla subsalavica, Dianthus praecox subsp. praecox, and Primula auricula are among the rare plant species.

The surrounding area is also characterized by mountains: Baske and Slimáčkova are located near Omšenie, while Truborka and Vápec lie in the wider vicinity of the village. In the Havránková dolina valley, the stream has been protected as a natural monument since the 1990s. The protected area covers just under 5 hectares.

Hiking and activities

A blue-marked route to Baske begins directly in Omšenie; the ascent takes 2.5 to 3 hours. A tourist hut is located below the summit. A winter hiking gathering is also held on Baske every year.

The Lesnícky náučný chodník educational forest trail begins at the bridge by the reservoir on the Kamenický stream in the Baračka district. Fishing is possible at the Omšenská priehrada, including for catfish, tench, carp, and pike. The Žihľavník Equestrian Club in Omšenie offers carriage and sleigh rides, riding lessons in the indoor arena, Western riding, and guided horseback leading.

The excursion to Omšenská Baba begins at the small parking area by the cemetery in Omšenie and takes approximately 2.5 hours in total, including rest breaks.

Churches and memorial sites

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Omšenie is Romanesque and dates from the first half of the 13th century. It has a Romanesque tower, a rectangular floor plan with a polygonal apse, and is listed under ÚZPF number 1291/1.

Outside Omšenie, in the direction of Trenčianske Teplice, stands the Baroque Chapel of the Virgin Mary from 1794. The chapel contains a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. The churches of Svätá Helena and Svätý Vendelín are also located in the wider regional surroundings of Omšenie.

The Slovak writer and cultural representative Daniel Krman was born in Omšenie on 28 August 1663. A memorial plaque in the village commemorates him. At the end of the Kamenická Valley in Omšenie stands a monument to American airmen. It commemorates the shooting down of an American bomber in 1944, in which Roland W. Morin lost his life.

Traditions and local celebrations

The Omšenský kroj traditional costume is associated with the mountain-farming and pastoral character of the area and is still maintained in Omšenie as a local tradition. The Žihľavník Equestrian Club organizes Western Day once a year. Local celebrations also include the Omšenské hodové slávnosti, featuring music, entertainment, and socializing.
