Hotels in Svinná: Local History, Church and Fašiangy

Svinná has a history with several clearly dated milestones. The origins of Svinná are dated to the years 1171 to 1180. The existence of Svinná is indirectly assumed for the year 1208; the municipality “Suina” is mentioned in the boundary description of Dobrašov. The first direct written reference dates from 1439; the name “Possessio seu villa ZWYNNA” appears in it. Thus, early dates exist alongside different historical forms of the name.

Culture

A notable sacred monument is the church in Svinná. It was consecrated on 11 November 1923 by Bishop Dr. Karol Kmeťko and was built in the Art Nouveau style with Neo-Gothic elements. A Pietà statue from the mid-17th century is located on the side altar of the Holy Sepulchre and is protected by the monuments authority. Another ecclesiastical detail concerns the chapel in Malá Neporadzka: The bell in the small tower is called “sv. Mária” and was cast in 1919 at the workshop of Pavel Ranko in Trenčín.

Customs

Fašiangy in Svinná lasts two days and combines a procession with its own ceremony. On Saturday, a procession of carnival masks makes its way through the municipality; on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the “pochovávanie basy” ceremony follows. Local firefighters have been involved in organising Fašiangy practically since their foundation in 1884. Approximately 11 kilometres are covered during the procession of carnival masks. This distance corresponds to the total length of all roads in the municipality.

Geographical setting

Svinná lies along the upper course of the Svinnica stream. The Svinica reservoir is located in the vicinity of Svinná, where sport fishing and water sports are possible. For rail connections, Svinná has a railway station on the Trenčín–Chynorany railway line. Thus, both a body of water in the nearby area and a specifically named railway line form part of the geographical picture of the locality.
