Trenčín: Hotels between the Castle, Synagogue and Brezina

Trenčín combines prominent cultural monuments with Brezina Forest Park, which extends into the city area. The most distinctive landmark is Trenčín Castle: it is a national cultural monument on a steep rock and, together with Spiš and Devín castles, is considered one of the largest castles in Europe.

Culture and History

From the 11th century onwards, the castle was a royal castle, developed into an important border fortress and later became the seat of the county. The castle houses exhibition rooms and numerous displays of the Trenčín Museum. The castle rock is also home to a significant epigraphic memorial from the end of the earlier Roman imperial period: a victory inscription commemorating a military victory.

The town tower is a reminder of the original medieval town fortifications. It is a surviving remnant of one of their gates; climbing the Trenčín town tower involves 54 steps.

The Trenčín Synagogue was built in 1913 to a design by Berlin architect Richard Scheibner. The building is a historicist modern reinforced-concrete structure with Byzantine and Moorish-Oriental elements. Inside, the original blue dome with an elaborately designed chandelier and coloured windows with ornamental and floral motifs have been preserved.

Nature and Trails

Brezina Forest Park is a south-western extension of the Strážovské vrchy mountains that extends into the city area of Trenčín. There are paths and routes for walkers, runners and cyclists. The network consists exclusively of paths reserved for pedestrians, paths reserved exclusively for cyclists and shared paths. The DIVO trails are narrow forest paths for mountain bikes and offer varying levels of difficulty.

Several educational and hiking trails provide access to different topics relating to the forest park. The educational trail Origin and Development of the Forest is 1,500 metres long, has 12 information panels and can be accessed from the JUH residential area or from Hotel Veverica. The educational trail North is 1,410 metres long and has seven stations covering the history of Brezina, soils and the plant species growing there.

The Titanitka hike in Brezina Forest Park starts at Železák, is 7 km long and takes approximately three hours; this time indication is approximate. Brezina Forest Park also has nine official fire pits that visitors can use freely.

On the Water

Another perspective is offered by a trip on the Dominik. Nautical activities include taking photographs with a real ship's wheel, measuring the water depth using a method from the era of Mississippi paddle steamers and learning various sailor's knots. The boat trip on the Dominik offers views of Trenčín and the surrounding area.
