Soblahov: Nature, Culture and Hotels in Slovakia

Soblahov lies in a three-kilometre-long, enclosed valley of the Soblahovský potok stream below the mountain ring of the Strážovské vrchy. Above the village rises Ostrý vrch, at 767 metres above sea level.

Landscape

One of the prominent natural areas is the Bindárka National Nature Reserve on the western slopes of the Strážovské vrchy. It lies below Ostrý vrch, where the Dolinový potok flows into the Považské podolie, was designated in 1983 and covers 8.97 hectares. Bindárka is a very well-preserved alluvial fen with flowing water. Near Dolinka there is also an isolated population of the strictly protected large-flowered pasque flower.

The Ostrý vrch Nature Reserve encompasses a beech forest at the summit. The beech stands are about 100 years old; beech is the dominant tree species, with other deciduous trees mixed in. The Soblahov lookout tower, a 9.5-metre-high wooden structure with two viewing platforms, provides an additional point of orientation in this landscape. From there, views extend over Soblahov, Trenčianska Turná, Mníchova Lehota, Trenčín and Nové Mesto nad Váhom. The tower can be reached directly from Soblahov in about ten minutes.

Culture

The parish church in Soblahov is documented in records from 1332 to 1337. The Early Gothic Church of Saint Nicholas the Bishop is listed as a national cultural monument. A Late Baroque chapel dedicated to Saint Vincent stands in Soblahov by a stream and the main road. At a stream by the road junction towards Ostrý vrch stands the Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, erected in 1789.

A separate chapter in the village's history is the so-called Soblahovský habánsky dvor. The Anabaptists founded it in the 16th century. Skilled craftsmen worked there, especially cutlers, saddlers and potters. The Classicist Chapel of Saint Vendelin was built in 1802 after the inhabitants vowed, during a period of severe livestock losses, to build a chapel dedicated to Saint Vendelin. Above the altar table is a polychrome image of the saint carved in stone.

Outdoor activities

Hiking is also represented in Soblahov by recurring scheduled events. At the 36th Soblahovská 35-ka on 9 May 2026, two hiking routes of 35 kilometres and 15 kilometres were available. Traditionally, Soblahov also hosts an evening New Year's Eve-eve ascent of Ostrý vrch; one such ascent took place on 29 December 2025.

Chata pod Ostrým vrchom serves as a tourist and sports facility, a summer recreation area and a winter sports centre for skiing, and continues to fulfil this function to this day. A cycle excursion route leads from Trenčín to Soblahov and from there for four kilometres to Chata pod Ostrým vrchom. Free parking spaces are available there, including accessible spaces; the entrance to the chalet is also accessible.

Hojdačka Soblahov can be reached from Chata pod Ostrým vrchom via a blue-marked hiking trail. The trail is considered an easy hike suitable for an outing with children; it takes approximately one hour. Hojdačka Soblahov is located above the municipality of Soblahov of the same name in Trenčín District, near Ostrý vrch.

The history of transport is also connected with the village: the mountain railway, construction of which began in 1912, ran through the cadastral areas of Soblahov.
