Gallandau: Hotels for culture, Galandia and cycling routes

Gallandau combines historic manor houses, regional museum culture, water-based activities and cycling routes. In Galanta, the range of attractions extends from Neo-Gothic and Renaissance architecture to exhibitions on local history and a water complex open year-round. The cultural picture is complemented by a traditional market heritage, wine tastings and various outdoor activities.

Culture

The Neo-Gothic manor house acquired its present Neo-Gothic appearance in 1861, with Romantic elements on the façade and inside. Its north wing serves as an exhibition pavilion. It houses the Zoltán Kodály Memorial Room in the Neo-Gothic manor house in Galanta; the Karol Duchoň Memorial Room is arranged as a permanent exhibition in the north wing. Also on permanent display is the exhibition “Room of Antique Gramophones and Shellac Records” from the collection of Kristián Takács.

The Renaissance manor house was built by František Esterházy around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. It houses an exhibition on bourgeois domestic culture from the end of the 19th century, as well as a local history exhibition on Galanta. This covers the earliest material evidence and written sources through to the development of crafts and domestic culture in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Galanta Local History Museum was founded in 1969 with the task of documenting the development of nature and society by building, protecting, processing and presenting regional collections. It focuses in particular on the history of milling in the catchment area of the Little Danube and along the lower Váh.

Religious buildings are also part of the town’s historic heritage. The Esterházy Princes’ Chapel was built in 1871 and restored in 1998. Inside are an oil painting of the same age entitled “Ukrižovanie” and Baroque stone sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul dating from 1741. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen the King is a monumental two-towered Classicist building with Baroque elements. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar from the furnishings of the demolished Baroque chapel of 1741.

The Galantské trhy preserve a market tradition dating back to the 17th century. Traditional features include an annual wine street on the grounds of the Neo-Gothic manor house in the town park.

Nature and activities

The historic park surrounding the Neo-Gothic manor house is considered Galanta’s largest continuous green space and offers visitors opportunities for short-term relaxation. Galandia is available for water activities: the year-round water complex includes an indoor swimming pool and four stainless-steel pools. The indoor facilities also include a children’s pool and a water slide.

From Galanta, you can connect to the Váh long-distance cycling route in the direction of Kolónia, Váhovce and the Kaskády recreation area. The cycling routes in Galanta run through flat, easily manageable terrain and are considered suitable for children and less experienced cyclists.

Promitor Vinorum offers organised wine tastings for groups, combined with a visit to the wine cellar. The Ranč na Striebornom jazere complex has two lakes where fishing is possible and includes a themed children’s playground and a riding school.
