Veľký Grob: Hotel, Churches, Embroidery and Educational Trails

In Veľký Grob, church architecture, embroidery and educational trails meet in a landscape between the northern foothills of the Danubian Lowland and the southernmost part of the Trnava Hills. The history of the village is reflected both in historic buildings and in traditional patterns, markets and paths through the surrounding area.

Landscape and Water

To the east of Veľký Grob, in the Danubian Lowland, lies the Uľanská mokraď wetland area. The cadastral territory of Veľký Grob also contains four peat bogs that offer opportunities for fishing.

Culture and History

The Pálfiovský kaštieľ was probably built in the second half of the 17th century as the seat of an administrative district of a feudal estate and as the residence of the estate administrator. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anne in Veľký Grob was created in 1771 by expanding an earlier Baroque chapel. It contains an organ from the workshop of Valentín Arnold, an organ builder from Trnava, dating approximately from around 1800.

The Evangelical church in Veľký Grob was built in 1788 as a Toleration church. In 1936, it was demolished and rebuilt according to a design by the architect M. M. Harminc; the Baroque-Classical tower from the late 18th century was preserved. The embroidery ornamentation of Čataj and Veľký Grob was transferred to textile painting and decorates the altar cloths of the Evangelical church. The cultural centre in Čataj is also decorated with murals by Mária Bagiová.

Before the First World War, Veľký Grob was a well-known centre of embroidery. The embroidery, the distinctive Veľký Grob folk costume, the painted rooms and hallways, and the architecture of the old houses combine Slovak, Haban, Croatian and Hungarian cultural influences with a distinctive local character. The traditional costume and embroidery of the Evangelical population of Veľký Grob and Čataj are characteristic of these two municipalities through their colours, ornamental decorations and embroidery patterns.

The cultural element “Ornament from Čataj and Veľký Grob” has an inscription year of 2019. In the vicinity of Veľký Grob, Pätoprstá Mária was one of the notable embroiderers and pattern designers. She mastered traditional pre-drawn embroidery, including its pattern forms and variations, for parts of women’s folk costumes in Veľký Grob.

The Veľký Grob–Čataj Evangelical congregation commemorates the consecration of the church on the second-to-last Sunday in August. A monument in Veľký Grob commemorates a total of 41 documented fallen soldiers.

Markets and Community Days

In 2022, 2023 and 2024, several farmers’ markets were held in Veľký Grob at the local marketplace. The farmers’ markets offer a wide selection of producers and growers from Veľký Grob and the surrounding region, as well as a snack stand.

The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda took place as a recurring part of the Community Days for the second time in 2022 and the third time in 2023. The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda in 2022 featured several disciplines that tested the participants’ agricultural skills.

Educational Trails and Paths

Veľký Grob has a local educational trail about the history of the municipality, which runs through the built-up area and includes eight information panels. The Náučný chodník okolo „Rašeliny“ educational trail follows an approximately 3-kilometre route around the Rašelinisko pond. It has four educational panels and one information panel providing information about the most important representatives of the nearby fauna and flora, including mammals, fish and birds.

The educational trail begins at the “Pod vŕbami” recreation area, which offers seating, a place for cooking food and shelter from strong sunlight. Cycle route 2212 passes through fields by the gravel lake to Veľký Grob. The Pusté Úľany–Veľký Grob hiking route leads to Veľký Grob.
