Šoporňa: Churches, the Váh and Historic Routes

Šoporňa lies in the Danubian Lowland on the left bank of the Váh. Its traditional local features include a history documented as far back as historical records reach, sacred buildings, traces of historic transport routes and landscape connections with the river.

Location and Routes

Šoporňa lies about seven kilometres southeast of Sereď on the road towards Šaľa. From the Bratislava–Nitra motorway, the village can be seen on the right after Sereď. Its historic transport location is also part of the village's history: the most important Czech–Hungarian long-distance road from the Danubian Lowland through the Little Carpathians to Moravia ran through Šoporňa.

A remnant of this historic road is now a field path. It separates the land sections of Novčaš and Hony and has always been called Novozámska cesta. The old name has thus been preserved right into today's landscape.

History

Šoporňa was first mentioned in a document in 1251 under the name Supurni. Another historical connection can be seen in the watermills on the Váh: historic watermills stood on the Old Váh and, after the regulation of the Váh in 1933, were moved opposite the church into the bed of the New Váh.

Chapels and Church

One of the notable sacred buildings is the chapel “Kaplnka Panny Márie na Štrkovci”. It was built in the Neo-Gothic style towards the end of the 19th century and has a Neo-Gothic façade with two small side towers in Štrkovec. There is also a wooden bell tower beside the chapel, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. It is made of oak wood and was completely reconstructed in 2007.

A second chapel is the “Kaplnka sv. Anny”. It was probably built in 1750 out of gratitude for the end of a plague epidemic. In the village centre stands the “Kostol Panny Márie Snežnej” church in Šoporňa. Built in 1770, the structure has a single nave, a polygonal-ended presbytery and an integrated tower. Inside are Baroque statues of Saints Peter and Paul from the second half of the 18th century.

Culture and Nature

Šoporňa's multifunctional cultural centre houses an exhibition room dedicated to folk traditions. The connection with the Váh continues at the river's old channel: fishing is regularly practised there near Šoporňa. Šoporňa is also known for a hunting ground focused on pheasant breeding.
