At the Sereď City Museum, the history of the place is combined with different forms of presentation. The museum is located in the former Roman Catholic parish, now known as Fándlyho fara, and has six permanent exhibitions. These include the tactile exhibition “A Dialogue of Recognition Through Touch,” which uses modern technology, including a 3D model and audio commentary in Slovak and English, for blind and visually impaired visitors. The main exhibition is dedicated to Šintava Water Castle. It presents archaeological finds from the courtyard of Sereď Castle, including ceramics, tiles, valuable glass, weapons, smaller objects and coins from excavations carried out between 1984 and 1992.

Historical buildings can also be found outside the museum in Sereď. Sereď Castle and Park preserve a surviving part of Šintava Castle, created by connecting and rebuilding parts of the former water castle. The bastion of Šintava Fortress contains so-called casemates with two pairs of gun embrasures, a large vaulted room and three pillars. The structure was built of bricks in the mid-16th century, around 1550. The Jewish ritual bath, the mikveh, was built in 1904–1905. The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1781 in the Baroque-Classical style and is one of the city’s sights.

History and Remembrance

The Holocaust Museum in Sereď preserves the memory of the events of the Holocaust that affected Slovak Jews and serves to educate the general public. The museum’s educational work takes place in the authentic premises of the former labour and later concentration camp. The Holocaust Museum also offers a guided tour or explanation in sign language.

The cadastral area of Sereď contains a protected park area that follows the layout of the former outer Renaissance fortifications of Šintava Castle. This means that the city area contains both structural evidence of the former water castle and a park area along the course of its former outer fortifications.

Events

The Seredský Hodový Jarmok regularly takes place in the last third of June, traditionally around St John’s Day. Since 2022, the programme has also included historical and craft events. Since 2015, concerts in the municipal amphitheatre have also been part of the Seredský Hodový Jarmok.

Cycling Route and Accessibility

A cycling route along the Váh embankment connects the northern and southern parts of the cadastral area of Sereď. This cycling route is part of the Vážska cyklo-magistrála. Sereď can be reached via motorway connections to Bratislava, Nitra and Trnava, as well as by rail.
