Oľdza: Community Pond, History and Regional Cuisine

Oľdza combines a community pond, the Lehnice Bird Protection Area and distinctive traces from several historical periods. It also offers regional cuisine and recurring events. This makes it possible to experience nature, culinary traditions and the history of the place from a variety of perspectives.

Deň detí a rodiny is a recurring public event day in Oľdza. As a local event date, it can be taken into account when planning the timing of a trip. Its character remains closely connected with community life and the local events calendar.

The cuisine of Oľdza and its microregion is known for combining Hungarian and Slovak culinary traditions. High-quality ingredients, traditional recipes refined over generations, and careful, time-consuming preparation form its foundation. A specific expression of this culinary character is the goulash-cooking competition, a recurring local event in Oľdza. Cooking goulash is the focus of the competition. The competition has been announced for 1 August 2026; it was already held in 2021. At that time, the programme included a cultural programme, accompanying attractions and street entertainment.

Fishing at the Oľdza community pond is possible with annual, half-year and daily permits. All three types of permit are available at the municipal office during office hours. Daily permits are also available from the fisheries authority; this additional issuing point applies only to daily permits. When preparing for a fishing trip, choosing the appropriate type of permit is therefore the first important consideration. The issuing location is equally important, because not every type of permit is available at both locations. Under the regulations for 2025–2026, fishing at the community lake is permitted on three freely chosen days per week. The weekly framework is therefore also one of the specific details that play a role in scheduling a fishing trip.

The Lehnice Bird Protection Area also includes the cadastral area of Oľdza. Oľdza has two bus stops and no railway station. Those using public transport can immediately incorporate these two facts into their arrival planning.

Oľdza is mentioned in 1239 as Olgia and in 1259 as Ouga. The village is associated with a significant archaeological site; its municipal area contains finds from prehistory, the Middle Ages and the modern era. The finds thus span the period from prehistory through the Middle Ages to the modern era. Specific buildings include a second municipal belfry on Oľdza’s main street, bearing the date 1956. Oľdza is also home to the Prícestná baroková kaplnka, a Baroque wayside chapel. The belfry and the chapel each make their own architectural contribution to the village landscape.
