Šamorín – Danube Cycle Path, POMLÉ Forest Park and Culture

Šamorín combines a cycle route, forest park, historic buildings and sports facilities. The international Danube Cycle Path runs along the dam of the Hrušov Reservoir on the outskirts of Šamorín. Signposts guide cyclists from the Hrušov Reservoir into the town and as far as POMLÉ Forest Park. As part of a one-day tour, you can also cycle along a 38 km section of the Danube from Hainburg an der Donau to Šamorín via the Devínska brána and Bratislava.

Nature

POMLÉ Forest Park is a 10-hectare municipal forest park situated around a former branch of the Danube. An educational trail in POMLÉ Forest Park conveys the natural values of floodplain forests. Cultural events are regularly held in the forest park’s amphitheatre.

Culture

The Reformed Church in Šamorín is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful churches on Žitný ostrov. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built according to plans by the architect J. G. Altenburg and completed in 1778. It has a richly decorated late Baroque interior with ceiling frescoes, a main altar and four side altars. Another historic church bears the name Kostol sv. Margaréty z Antiochie, was built around 1260 and is one of the Romanesque churches on Žitný ostrov.

The synagogue in Šamorín was built in 1912 and combines Romanesque architectural elements with motifs from the Middle East; its windows are decorated with coloured glass. Thanks to At Home Gallery, it now serves as an exhibition space for works of art and as an occasional concert hall. The Mestský vlastivedný dom presents the traditions of Šamorín and the tools used in urban crafts. For groups, the Mestský vlastivedný dom offers an interactive gold-panning presentation.

Sport and Recreation

The x-bionic® sphere complex includes an Olympic equestrian centre. x-bionic® sphere is a sports and leisure centre offering suitable conditions for professional and amateur sports, as well as recreation and dining. Throughout the year, x-bionic® sphere hosts numerous national and international competitions in show jumping, endurance riding and dressage.

x-bionic® sphere has swimming pools, a wellness area, a cinema and a bar. Visitors can go horse riding there, and riding courses for beginners are also offered.

Festivals and Flavours

Šamorín organises the Dni Svätého Štefana event series, which begins on Friday, 15 August. The festival takes place every year on the last Friday and Saturday in August. Its programme includes, among other things, cooking goulash, baking langos and craft workshops for children.

The festival, subtitled „Chute, vína, tradície“, combines cuisine, wine and traditions and is based on the values of traditional culture. During the two-day festival, 20 recognised domestic and foreign winemakers present themselves. Thus, in Šamorín, regional food, craft activities and wine appear alongside buildings and landscapes as established components of the event programme.
