Trstená Na Ostrove – Hotels, History and the Danube Cycle Route

Trstená Na Ostrove is located in the southern part of Žitný ostrov in the Danube Lowland. The village combines a clearly identifiable landscape history with religious buildings, memorial sites, village symbols and the route of the International Danube Cycle Route. This brings together different historical and cultural layers without reducing the place to a single attraction.

Location and Landscape

The area around Trstená na Ostrove was formerly covered by swamps, lakes and, above all, reeds. This historic landscape is also reflected in a characteristic symbol of the municipality: in 1982, a group of twelve reed-thatched huts was created in Trstená na Ostrove, becoming a characteristic symbol of the municipality. The landscape and village image are therefore shaped both by the former surroundings and by a later, deliberately recognisable form.

Culture and History

Several buildings and memorial markers make different chapters of the village’s history visible. On the main road towards Baka stands a stone wayside cross, probably dating from the first third of the 19th century, featuring a relief of the Virgin Mary. The chapel dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built in 1879. The bell tower of Trstená na Ostrove stands in the centre of the village.

The memorial sites are also part of the local landscape. In the cemetery of Trstená na Ostrove, there is a memorial erected in 1998 to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Another memorial column was erected in 2011 in memory of the people who were relocated between 1947 and 1948. The references thus range from religious markers and the cemetery to an explicitly named memorial to the local population.

Trstená na Ostrove was first mentioned in writing in 1250 and has been recorded under the name Nadast since 1250. This historical name stands alongside the later architectural and commemorative traces of the village and adds an early written history of the place to the overall picture.

Cycling

The International Danube Cycle Route runs through the cadastral area of Trstená na Ostrove along the embankment of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks. The connection to the route is therefore precisely defined geographically: it is not the entire village that is described as a cycle route, but the cadastral area with the route running along the embankment. From a regional perspective, this information connects Trstená na Ostrove with the International Danube Cycle Route and the technical infrastructure of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks.

Community Life and Gastronomy

Deň obce is a recurring community celebration in Trstená na Ostrove. The 15th edition had already been announced for 11 August 2018; an edition is listed for 30 July 2026. The information refers to the respective dates.

A gastronomic event has also been announced for the village: the 4th Zabacsata Gastro Festival was announced for 16 May 2026 in Trstená na Ostrove, on the outdoor stage of the cultural centre, from 12 noon until late evening. Together with Deň obce, this event is part of local community life; both events are associated with the dates stated for them.
