Moravský Svätý Ján: Habánsky dvor, the March and EuroVelo 13

Moravský Svätý Ján combines cultural history with landscapes along the March and clearly described cycling and educational trails. Written sources date the arrival of the Habaners from Moravia in Moravský Svätý Ján to the years 1540 to 1550. This historical trace is one of the distinctive themes of the village and leads directly to Habánsky dvor.

Culture

Habánsky dvor takes the form of a square courtyard with three entrances and a small chapel in the middle. The years 1839 and 1994 are displayed on the front of the chapel tower. The traditional Habán-Hody festival takes place on the grounds every September. The Roman Catholic classicist Church of St John the Baptist is also part of Moravský Svätý Ján’s architectural history. It was built from 1840 to 1851 on the site of an older Baroque church.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, an octagonal building, is located in the Salaš district. The Kaštieľ in Moravský Svätý Ján was originally a Baroque building from the mid-18th century. The building is three storeys high and rectangular; its façade was designed in the Art Nouveau style. KC JÁNY is located beneath the cultural centre; it is a cultural and community centre with a library, gallery and rooms for community activities.

Nature

The Čeker–Čertová studňa National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral territory of Moravský Svätý Ján. It protects natural communities of a former channel of the March as well as riparian stands. EuroVelo 13 is also closely connected with the flora and fauna of the March, which is considered a paradise for waterfowl.

Routes and connections

The Slovak section of EuroVelo 13 is 90 kilometres long. It begins in Bratislava at the Austrian border, runs along the border with the Czech Republic and ends in Moravský Svätý Ján. The section to Moravský Svätý Ján has practically no climbs and follows asphalt roads of varying quality, usually with little or no car traffic.

The Náučný chodník Nivou Moravy Devín–Moravský Svätý Ján educational trail ends in Moravský Svätý Ján. It is a self-guided, linear, year-round cycling educational trail that can be followed in both directions, with a focus on natural history, cultural history and nature conservation. A permanent bridge over the March connects Moravský Svätý Ján with Hohenau. In 2005, it replaced a pontoon bridge that had stood there since 1994.
