Veľké Kostoľany: Churches, History and Landscape
In Veľké Kostoľany, a linear streamside village developed along the Chtelnička stream, which flows through the Kostolianska Valley. Culture and History
The late Gothic Church of Saint Vitus was built in 1464 and still preserves a chancel with a Gothic rib vault, bricked-up Gothic windows, a stone sacrament house and a stone saddle portal. The main altar dates from 1815 and bears an image of Saint Vitus.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was built in 1768 as a Baroque chapel with a semicircular apse, dome and incorporated tower. It preserves a Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century with an image and a relief of the Virgin Mary. Every year, on the Sunday around 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage takes place to a chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary; believers from the surrounding municipalities take part.
In 1924, Jozef Magula, who came from Veľké Kostoľany, had a new Stations of the Cross built, replacing the earlier Calvary depiction consisting of seven masonry images. Archaeological traces also reach far back: excavations in 1959 uncovered a human skeleton from the 5th to 12th century AD, as well as the skeleton of a child from the Early Iron Age.
Archaeological finds include an amber bead, Late Stone Age Slavonic pottery, Moravian painted pottery, and stone and blade tools made of radiolarite and obsidian. Investigations at the old brickworks and clay pits in Zákostoľany attest to settlement from the Neolithic period, approximately from 5000 to 2000 BC. The brass band tradition in Veľké Kostoľany began in 1919 with a local music group and, according to the municipality's history, continues to this day.

Holý Vrch, Šanec and Veľká Pec are mountains in the surroundings of Veľké Kostoľany. Zlatý Vrch is a mountain in the wider regional area.
