Ljubno: Church History, Pilgrimage Routes and Frescoes
Ljubno is a place where culture and hiking exist closely side by side. Historical traces and established pilgrimage routes form the two threads along which the place can be explored. Its special features can be discovered both in the townscape and along the routes.
Culture and History
The first records of the church, originally dedicated to Saint Lawrence, date back to 1377. During renovations in the 17th century, an event turned the church in Ljubno into an important pilgrimage site. The original dedication and the later pilgrimage history therefore belong to different periods.
The “Church of Mary Help of Christians,” also known as the “Church of 'Stricken' Mary,” stands among the picturesque narrow streets of Ljubno.
Most of the frescoes in Ljubno were created over the past twenty years by the Russian artists Maša Bersan Mašuk and Nikolaj Aleksandrovič Mašuk.
The memory of the Ljubno bowls is also still alive today. Local production came to an end in the 20th century.
Pilgrimage Routes
The Otoče - Brezje Pilgrimage Route is an easy 4.9 km hike with a walking time of 1.5 hours. It runs mainly across meadows and through forests; a short section follows a paved road.
The Otoče - Brezje Pilgrimage Route allows for a detour to Ljubno to visit the pilgrimage church of the “Church of 'Stricken' Mary” and the frescoes on the façades of residential buildings. In addition, the more than 300-year-old pilgrimage route to Marija Udarjena leads to Ljubno.
Townscape and Landscape
Visitors can stroll through Ljubno’s winding narrow streets towards the church. The houses of Ljubno stand close together on the slopes of the former pilgrimage church.
A cart track above Ljubno leads across a meadow to expansive panoramic views.
