Hrib-Loški Potok: Churches, Karst Fields and Nature

Hrib-Loški Potok brings together religious architecture, karst landscapes, local traditions and special places in the surrounding area within a small space. At its centre is Tabor, a prominent hill and viewpoint in Hrib from which the surrounding area can be seen. The history of the place is also visible at this site.

Culture

The parish church of St Leonard, a Baroque central-plan church built around 1670, stands on Tabor. The cemetery church of St Barbara is located next to the parish church; the year 1673 is inscribed on its portal. The name Tabor recalls the period of Ottoman incursions, when the inhabitants sought safety there.

The Ogenjca Cave is located nearby. During the Second World War, it housed a secret field hospital. A memorial plaque stands at the entrance, and a log cabin arranged as a memorial museum is located nearby. Another cultural and historical attraction is the ethnographic collection of Jakob Bartol in nearby Travnik. It displays objects from agriculture, transport and various crafts, including traditional woodworking tools from the Potoško area. The living heritage of the local carpentry tradition is also presented in the Loški Potok area.

Nature

Natural attractions in Hrib-Loški Potok include the Travniški potok stream with a swallow hole. In the surrounding area, a uvala can turn into a lake during heavy rain in autumn and spring. The karst character of the landscape is also evident at Hribovski vrt Knavs: the garden offers views of the Travniško polje and Retijsko polje karst fields as well as Tabor hill.

Experiences

Naravoslovni dom has exhibition rooms and offers nature workshops about the coexistence of people, forests and large carnivores. By arrangement, experienced hunters offer bear photography programmes. The photographs are taken from carefully arranged observation hides.

The Hribovski vrt garden belonging to the Knavs couple is laid out like a park. Flowering perennials and numerous maple trees grow there; the grounds also include a pond and various wooden garden elements. Guests who have made a reservation are welcomed with a homemade aperitif. Culinary traditions are also among the local traditions preserved in Hrib-Loški Potok.

A traditional hike to the partisan field hospital at Ogenjca takes place on the last Saturday of July each year and starts in Hrib. Regular bus connections run from Hrib-Loški Potok to Ljubljana.
