Sodražica: Hiking Trails, Karst Landscape and Craft Tradition

The “Sodraška pešpot” is an approximately 40-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts and ends in Sodražica. It is signposted with mountain hiking markers and additional trail markers bearing the abbreviation “SP”. The circular trail “Mimo Kadic na Travno goro” also starts in Sodražica. The circular trail “Pogled na Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe” likewise starts in the town and leads towards Dom na Travni gori.

There are also cycling routes associated with Sodražica. The “Preko Slemen in Travne gore” circular cycling route crosses two plateaus and returns to Sodražica. The “Po domovini rjavega medveda” cycling route is approximately 40 kilometres long and starts and ends in Sodražica. The “Sodraška pešpot” can also be incorporated into the routes of the “Ribniška pot”, “Potoška pot”, “Kočevska pot”, “Rimsko pot” and “Slovensko pot raziskav”.

The Kadice Gorge features water-carved pools, a short canyon, a natural waterfall and protected plant life. The Carniolan primrose (Primula carniolica) grows near Kadice in the municipality of Sodražica. This Slovenian endemic survived the Ice Age; Travna gora is its southernmost area of distribution.

Travna gora is part of the Velika gora mountain range and forms a high karst plateau. At approximately 900 to 1,200 metres, it is the highest part of the municipality of Sodražica.

The parish church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Sodražica was built in 1745 on the site of an earlier chapel of Saint Nicholas with a cemetery. Its marble high altar dates from 1928 and was made according to plans by the architect Ivan Vurnik. Next to the parish church is a memorial park dedicated to notable Slovenians who originated from Sodražica or worked there.

Another cultural site is the Maticova etno hiša in Ravni Dol. The museum showcases the life of a family from the Suha-Roba craft tradition, as well as life in rural households in the past century. The “Po rokodelskih krajih čudežev in legend” route is 21 kilometres long and passes through Sodražica. Its points of interest include a sitar-making workshop in Sodražica and the Psoglavac statue in Sodražica.

The Sodražica TIC provides visitors with information about Sodražica’s cultural heritage and sights, as well as events in the town and nearby places. The small Izver ski resort is located near Sodražica and is also suitable for families with children. Fishing for chub, carp, tench, rainbow trout and pike is available at the nearby Smrekovec pond.
