Culture and History

The mining history of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi goes back more than 250 years; the Mining Museum Zagorje explores this history. It is located in the former engine house of the Loke pri Kisovcu mine shaft and presents the history of mining and excerpts from the miners’ work through photographs, documentation, and various tools and items of equipment.

Noč pred nočjo is a traditional event in Zagorje ob Savi. The St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Zagorje ob Savi was built in 1872 and 1873. Since 1960, the Delavski dom Zagorje Cultural Centre has been the cultural centre of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. On Miners’ Day, 3 July, a celebration organised by the RMED Zagorje association was held in Zagorje.

Evropark is a reclaimed area of Ruardi that was formerly used for dumping slag and waste from nearby mines. Evropark has a small airfield with a 450-metre-long runway. There are also walking paths, a cycle path, a children’s playground, and the Argonaut ship.

The Javor mountain, the Crni Vrh (2) peak, Čemšeniška Planina mountain, and Dolgo Brdo mountain are located in the surroundings of the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi. The Zasavska Sveta gora hill is 852 metres high, lies on the left bank of the Sava between Zagorje ob Savi and Litija, and offers beautiful views. The Sušjek waterfall consists of a 4-metre-high lower section and a 15-metre-high upper section.

Goli hrib offers an easy hiking route approximately 3 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 272 metres. The Cilenca mountain bike park offers four named trails: Forest Bump, Jumanji, Super Mario, and French Connection. It covers 16 hectares and has an elevation difference of 200 to 230 metres.

Traditional knapovske dishes such as šmorn, funšterc, krumpentoč and ajmuht have been preserved in connection with the mining history of Zagorje ob Savi; they are still prepared in Zasavje today.
