Behind the unpronounceable name Székesfehérvár lies a fascinating story about one of Hungary’s outstanding cities. The royal tombs were once located here. The crown of the Hungarian monarch was also kept here during the Kingdom of Hungary.

Székesfehérvár was founded in 970 by the Hungarian prince Géza, amid the swamps and marshes in the area between Lake Velence and Lake Balaton. In Roman times, the city was called Alba Regia, meaning “the white royal city.” Later, the famous King István, Géza’s son, chose Székesfehérvár as his residence. This makes the city one of Hungary’s historic capitals, alongside Esztergom and Visegrád.

Unfortunately, not a single building from the reign of Saint István has survived in the city. The medieval Church of Saint Anne has been preserved. It was built on the site of the former cathedral of Alba Regia.

The city of Székesfehérvár and its present-day historic centre are the work of 18th-century architects. After destructive wars and a century and a half of Ottoman rule, the city was practically rebuilt from scratch between 1730 and 1780, under the rule of the Austrian monarchs. The cathedrals, villas and shops built at that time showcase the architects’ affinity for distinctive styles such as Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism to visitors today.

The castle built in the early 20th century is probably Székesfehérvár’s most remarkable attraction. Located on the outskirts of the city, it bears the name of its architect, Bory. The castle is original not only for the variety of styles used in its construction, but also for the way it was built. Bory was the only person to build the castle. Bory Castle is the result of one man’s efforts.

Székesfehérvár’s charming lanes and remarkable castle still allow the city to remain a capital of sorts today. It is no longer an administrative capital, but rather the capital of romantic Hungary.

Székesfehérvár: royal history and city centre

Székesfehérvár is one of Hungary’s historically significant cities. Formerly known as Alba Regia, it was closely connected with Hungarian royal history; today, historic squares, churches and museums sit alongside a lively city centre. The official Székesfehérvár city portal provides current information on culture, events and local services. For regional planning, see Hungary and Transdanubia.

The city centre is ideal for a walking tour that takes in both medieval history and the Baroque cityscape that emerged after later periods of war. Churches, squares and museums do not all fit into a short route with the same amount of time allotted to each visit. If you are planning a guided tour or an indoor visit, check the latest opening times and leave time for breaks between stops. Culture and history can help you choose according to your interests.

Plan Bory Castle as a separate destination

Bory Castle is a distinctive architectural and artistic highlight. The official Bory Castle portal describes the complex as a private museum and provides information about its rooms, courtyards, exhibitions and current visitor arrangements. It is not simply another stop in the city centre: set aside a separate block of time for getting there, visiting and returning. Check the name and visitor information directly with the museum before your visit.

For practical route planning, consult getting there and transport and, if travelling by train, the information on railway stations. If you are driving, factor parking and the return journey into your city walking tour. This leaves time to explore the centre, even if your visit to Bory Castle takes longer than expected.

Combine Lake Velence, Budapest and Lake Balaton

Székesfehérvár can be visited as a day trip or as an overnight stop on a journey through Transdanubia. Lake Balaton lies in a different direction, so allow for the travel time separately. Budapest is also not an automatic addition to every day’s itinerary. Nature and landscapes can help you decide whether a lakeshore, a park or another cultural destination would make a good addition after your visit to the city.

Before setting out, plan travel preparations, money and payments and language and communication. Opening hours, exhibitions, events and admission prices should only be relied on after checking the latest information.

Combine the old town, Bory Castle and royal history

Székesfehérvár is a good choice for a cultural stop if you plan the historic city centre and the out-of-town Bory Castle as separate parts of your itinerary. Squares, churches and the city’s history fit differently into the day than the trip to the museum. The official travel information for Hungary provides additional up-to-date information about regions and local offerings.

The Transdanubian region can be combined with Lake Balaton or Tihany. Budapest is a city destination in its own right; Veszprém, Zalakaros and Szeged require extra distance and time. Plan your trip to Hungary around a few realistic stages.

Before your trip, check the latest information on getting there and transport, travel preparations, money and payments, staying safe while travelling, culture and history and nature and landscapes. Confirm admission, parking, weather, opening hours and your return journey for the specific date.
