Culture and History

The Church of Saint Wenceslas in Žabonosy is one of the oldest and most remarkable monuments in the Kolín region. The original Romanesque church, dating from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, retains ashlar masonry extending to two-thirds of the tower’s height, the entire western part of the church, a Romanesque portal arch with a semicircular top and spiral band on the southern wall of the nave, and a window bricked up above it. Together with the mortuary chapel, surrounding wall, cast-iron cross, and stone staircase, the church was entered in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic on May 3, 1958, under number 40018/2–887.

A fortress was built at the newly established farmstead in Žabonosy; it is first mentioned in 1584 in a promissory note issued by Bohumil. Another historical landmark is the former Rozkoš water mill, house no. 15. It lies on the northern outskirts of Žabonosy near the railway stop and is not open to the public. Its milling operation ended in 1934; the building was subsequently converted into a residence, which continues to serve this purpose today. The mill was first mentioned as part of the Žabonosy farmstead in 1654; at that time, it had three overshot water wheels supplied with water from the pond through a channel.
