Culture

Kounice Château stands on the site of a former, probably medieval fortress. Between 1612 and 1634, the fortress was rebuilt and expanded under Jan Rudolf Trčka into a three-winged Renaissance château; in 1719, the château was redesigned in the Baroque style. A chronogram on the château gate points to this alteration.

The listed complex of the Church of St James the Greater, “kostel sv. Jakuba Většího”, includes the area of the former cemetery, a surrounding wall with two gates, a staircase in front of the church, and a statue of St John of Nepomuk. The former malt house is another of Kounice’s surviving monuments. Sladovna – Panský pivovar is an original Renaissance brewery dating from the second half of the 16th century.

Nature

The disused Na skále quarry near Kounice is a rich site for fossil flora in sandstones and claystones of the Peruc Beds. Na skále lies 1 km southwest of Kounice; the site is freely accessible, and by car it is possible to approach to within 250 m.

A total of 72 bird species occur in the Kounice area. Kounický háj is a typical deciduous forest of lowlands and rolling landscapes that has developed into a mixed forest with diverse woodland flora.

Trails

The Kounická cesta educational trail runs along side streets in Kounice, across meadows along the floodplain of the Kounický potok and along the edge of an orchard to the Cihelna pond west of the municipality. Kounická cesta is marked with green-and-white educational trail signs and currently has three stations. The route also leads to a station called “Motte”, which commemorates a medieval fortification.

In 2026, the 15th edition of the “Kounická šlapka” cycling race was announced in Kounice.

Local Character

The brewing tradition in Kounice was revived when a batch of Kounický ležák was brewed for the first time in 112 years.
