Sloupno: Hotels and accommodation
Sloupno combines the history of its château with the Cidlina River on the eastern edge of the village. The present-day château was built after the mid-18th century under Abbot Benno I. Löbl as a Benedictine residence and served Břevnov-Broumov Monastery.
Château and history
The complex originated as a new Renaissance fortress built in Sloupno around the middle of the 16th century. It was later expanded in the Baroque style and converted into a château as a Benedictine residence. In 1748, Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer prepared the design for the present-day Sloupno Château.
Since 1996, Sloupno Château has been undergoing gradual and extensive reconstruction. The overall renovation was divided into five stages; in addition, a project was drawn up to save the cultural monument. The property was included in the Czech programme for the rescue of the architectural heritage.
Jan Amos KomenskĂ˝ is said to have hidden for some time on the Sloupno estate in a Renaissance fortress before going into exile in Poland.
Traces in the village
A monument to Josef Eduard Proche was erected in front of the Sloupno cemetery in 1958. A wooden cross commissioned by the estate manager Jiřà Hovad still stands today beside a country lane leading to Starý Bydžov.
A local curiosity has also been recorded: The apple variety cultivated in 1894 was named “Libernáč sloupenský”.
The Cidlina and nature
On the eastern edge of Sloupno, the Cidlina River flows through its riverbed known as the “Mlýnská Cidlina”. In the area around Sloupno, natural areas with diverse and rare flora and fauna can be found along both banks of the Cidlina for its entire length. The Cidlina River is a destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
