Kněžnice: Hotels and Accommodation
The cadastral area of Kněžnice extends into the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. North of Kněžnice lies the Cidlinský hřeben Natural Monument.
Nature
Cidlinský hřeben is an important geological site in the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. At the same time, it is a protected woodland complex with significant herbaceous undergrowth and the largest occurrence of wood ants in the Podkrkonoší region.
The Kozlov geological site can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail. Three lava flows can be observed at the site. Cavities within them contain chalcedony, agates and, in particular, quartz geodes and coloured quartz varieties, with amethyst predominating.
Hiking
Kněžnice is a good starting point for hikes. From Kněžnice, there are extensive views to the west over large parts of Český ráj, with Trosky Castle as a distinctive landmark.
History and Culture
The first written mention of Kněžnice dates from 1376 and appears in the court book of the town of Jičín.
Local monuments in Kněžnice include the statue of the Virgin Mary. The roadside shrines known as “Boží Muka” are also among them.
The crucifix on a pedestal in Kněžnice is a valuable early Neoclassical stone carving from 1801 by an anonymous local stonemason. It stands on the main road through Kněžnice, near the municipal office.
The rural farmstead at Kněžnice No. 66 is a large agricultural complex with a three-sided courtyard. It was extensively remodelled in the late 19th century and illustrates a form of development of agricultural farmsteads following the abolition of corvée labour.
