Kostelec: Hotels and Accommodation
Kostelec can be explored through specific traces of construction and settlement. The church, village square, and fortified settlement provide different points of reference for this.
Culture and History
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a filial church in Kostelec, stands in the village. It is Gothic in origin; the present church was created through a Renaissance rebuilding after the middle of the 16th century and a Baroque remodeling in the middle of the 18th century. The wooden bell tower beside the church was built in the 1880s. The former bell tower was one story higher and equipped with up to four bells.
Smaller historical features also add to the character of the village: The cross near the transformer bears the year 1756 and dates from the time of the Seven Years' War. The statue of the Virgin Mary on the village square dates from approximately the middle of the 18th century. A chapel behind the village is a local monument and is awaiting repair.
Fortified Settlement
The fortified settlement of Kostelec covers approximately 13.5 hectares, including its fortifications. Its fortifications were almost 1,500 meters long and enclosed an area of 12.20 hectares. The site was established in a location from which the entire Jičín Basin, including the Prachov Rocks, can be clearly seen.
Around the perimeter of the southern part of the fortified settlement, a rampart up to 4.5 meters high and a ditch excavated in front of it form the fortification. The surviving southern fortification is visible along the village road as an earthen rampart more than 2.5 meters high.
