Culture and History

Žlunice is characterized by historic sacred buildings and stone monuments. The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a brick building that probably dates from the second quarter of the 14th century. Between 1701 and 1704, it was extended to the west, with a tower and side chapel added in the process.

The Baroque Žlunice parish house was built in 1762–1765 by V. Jirsák based on earlier plans by V. Schneider. The parish house retains its original layout and original decorative stonework, including entrance portals and window surrounds with sills. In 2012, the parish house was declared a cultural monument.

The birthplace of the painter Václav Špála was formerly a brickworks leased by his father from the estate owners, the Czernin family of Dymokury. Below the parish house, a stone Pietà stands on a pedestal; it was acquired in 1749. At the fork of the roads to Sekeřice and Kozojídky, a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands among lime trees. On the western side of the former Švehlův dům, which now houses the municipal office, there is a monument to those who fell in the First World War.

Nature and Connections

Natural deciduous forests have been preserved in the Žlunické Forest, characterized by oaks, hornbeams, and linden trees.

KČT cycling route No. 4288 between Roudnice and Rožďalovice runs through Žlunice. IREDO bus route 154 or 610/590 connects Nový Bydžov, Smidary, Žlunice, Kozojedy, and Kopidlno.
