Veliš U Jičína: Hotels and Accommodation

Veliš Hill is now a popular viewpoint. The ruins of Veliš Castle offer views of Jičín and the Český ráj landscape.

Culture

In the center of Veliš stands the complex of St. Wenceslas Church on an artificially constructed terrace. A tall wall, faced on the outside with larger irregular sandstone blocks, encloses the terrace. The complex is a late Baroque monument; the present-day church was built from 1747 to 1752. The complex also includes an access ramp lined with statues and two chapels with sculptures on their roofs.

St. Wenceslas Church is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 22287/6-1429. The Šlik family tomb at the Veliš cemetery is designated as a monument of local importance. At the crossroads on the way to Vesec, the statue of the Immaculata in Veliš is likewise designated as a monument of local importance.

The Veliš observation pillar is made of brick, is 10.5 meters high, and has a cruciform ground plan.

History

The castle on Veliš Hill was once considered one of the strongest castles in Bohemia. The Compactata of Basel were kept in the castle for a long time. In 1658, the destruction of Veliš Castle was decided. Today, only a few structural remains of the castle survive on Veliš Hill.

Landscape and Trails

A yellow-marked hiking trail from Jičín leads over approximately 7 km to the ruins of Veliš Castle.

Regional Surroundings

In the wider regional surroundings of Veliš lies Mariánská zahrada, a unique Baroque designed landscape. Four chapels were built in the forests of the Velišský hřbet.
