Šonov: Hotels and accommodations

The entire area of Šonov lies within the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. In and around Šonov are geological features and several religious buildings.

Nature and trails

Homole, also known as Šonovská sopka, is located in the Javoří Mountains east of Šonov in the Czech Republic. At its summit is a ventarole with warm air escaping from it, forming a rocky depression approximately 4 m deep.

A blue hiking trail to Homole leads from Hvězda via Křinice and Šonov to Nowa Ruda. The geologically remarkable Kamenec locality lies approximately 1.2 km northeast of the centre of Šonov and comprises rocks, rock faces and outcrops of andesitoids (melaphyre).

Culture and history

The site of the former wooden Church of St John the Evangelist in Šonov, documented since 1354 and destroyed by fire in 1775, is now occupied by the neo-Gothic Chapel of Our Lady, built in 1877. It is accessible from the outside daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; access to the interior is possible by prior telephone arrangement with the Roman Catholic parish of Broumov.

The Church of St Margaret stands alone on a hill west of and above Šonov and offers views of Broumov and the surrounding countryside. It is an example of High Baroque architecture, was built in 1727–1730, and is indirectly attributed to Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Its floor plan consists of a passage oval with quadrilaterals bevelled at the ends.

The late Baroque vicarage in Šonov has a construction history that began in 1782 and continues to the present day.

Cycling

The 46 km moderate-to-difficult cycling circuit from Šonov through the Javoří Mountains via Głuszyca and Osówka for mountain bikes or trekking bikes begins at the intersection by the municipal office in Šonov.
