Beckov: Hotels and Accommodations

Bečkov is characterized by distinctive natural features: Bečkovský vodopád lies in the headwater area of a short, prominent valley cut approximately 1 km east of Bečkov. At the upper end of the village, Čertova rokle also extends as a gorge-like valley cut between the steep slopes of Mravenčí vrch and the nearby border mountain Końská.

Nature

Bečkovský vodopád comprises a rock wall with a plentiful, concentrated spring and a pseudokarst spring outlet, as well as a cascade. The entrance to Čertova rokle is formed by a group of bizarre rhyolite rocks in the forest at the foot of Vraní hory.

In the regional surroundings of Bečkov, the southern edge of Vraní hory forms the elongated ridge of Dlouhá stráň. Beyond the valley of Bečkovský potok and Ličná, a northwestern spur of Jestřebí hory with Janský vrch adjoins it. The path into Čertova rokle disappears in several places near the state border in confusing forest terrain.

Paths and Routes

Hiking and cycling trails lead from Bernartice to Bečkovský vodopád or to Jánský vrch with Krausova vyhlídka. The yellow hiking trail marking initially follows the saddle between Bečkov and Bernartice, then branches off toward the settlement of Rybníček and from there climbs to Jánský vrch.

A short walk to Bečkovský vodopád begins at the entrance to Bečkov and leads across a meadow and along the edge of the forest; wooden signposts indicate the way. The Bečkov–Bečkovský vodopád–Bečkov route is 2.5 km long in total.

Bečkov can be reached via a road junction from Bernartice. The “Góry Krucze a Bečkovský vodopád” hiking route runs through Bečkov and then on to Bernartice. Excursion route 29a also runs from Zlatá Olešnice via Rybníček and Bečkov to Bernartice u Trutnova.

History and Culture

Bečkov was first mentioned in writing in 1361. In earlier times, the inhabitants made their living from agriculture, weaving, and mining. Bečkov also formerly had a limestone quarry; the limestone was burned into lime in local lime kilns.

A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in Bečkov; it was donated in 1902 by Johann and Franziska Bischof. Local cultural monuments include a stone cross. A hexagonal chapel stands at a saddle between Bečkov and Bernartice.

Below Dlouhá stráň near the Polish border, a metal cross stands near Bečkov; it was made in 1851 by Johann Schmíd from Potschendorf and his wife. Near the former fire tower of Bečkov stands a wayside shrine with a shallow niche; the year 1836 is inscribed at its base.
