The Městské muzeum a galerie Lomnice nad Popelkou brings together several facets of the town: a permanent exhibition is dedicated to Lomnické suchary and the city’s industrial tradition. The museum also explores the history and ethnography of the Lomnicko region, the mineralogy and zoology of Český ráj and Podkrkonoší, and works by regional artists. Lomnické suchary have been produced in Lomnice nad Popelkou since the 19th century and are distinguished by a double-baking process. Lomnické pivo is a regional product; the history of brewing in Lomnice nad Popelkou dates back to the 16th century.

The program includes night tours of the museum as well as expert-led tours of the historic town center. Individual tours can be arranged.

Culture and History

Lomnice nad Popelkou Castle was built by the Valdštejn family in the 16th century and remodeled in the Baroque style by Václav Morzin in the 18th century. It regularly hosts the Léto na zámku cultural events series; occasional events, exhibitions, lectures, and concerts are also held there.

The architectural heritage also includes Karlov in Lomnice nad Popelkou, a village conservation area featuring folk architecture. Its large rectangular square is lined with single-story wooden houses with carved gables and arcades.

Nature

Nearby, south of Lomnice nad Popelkou, lies Jezírko pod Táborem. The peat lake has been protected as a natural monument since 1996. It preserves a habitat for the carnivorous round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) as well as a peat bog plant community.

When winter climate conditions are favorable, up to 30 kilometers of the Lomnická běžecká magistrála cross-country ski trail are groomed.

Viewpoint

The Skokanský můstek K-70 is an unusual observation tower with a chalice-shaped walkway, created by converting a ski jump. The 28-meter-high tower offers unobstructed panoramic views of the Jizera Mountains, the Ještědsko-kozákovský hřbet ridge, Český ráj, Bezděz, the Giant Mountains, and Lomnice nad Popelkou. It is accessible year-round; a box for voluntary entrance contributions is located at the foot of the tower.
