Staré Hamry: Hotels and Accommodations

Staré Hamry is located in the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Beskydy). In the local districts, characteristic wooden houses with pastures and small fields have been preserved, shaping the typical landscape of the Beskydy Mountains.

Nature and Landscape

The Podgruň natural monument is a wet high-moor meadow on the northwestern slope of the Gruň ridge in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains. Podgruň protects a high-moor meadow with rare and protected plant species. The Draplavý Nature Reserve preserves a small remnant of an original, primeval-like fir and beech forest along the geomorphologically interesting gorge of a mountain stream; rare and endangered plant and animal species depend on this habitat.

Culture and History

The wooden Church of the Virgin Mary on Gruň dates from 1887 and has a rectangular floor plan with a pentagonal presbytery. It has been protected as a cultural monument since October 8, 2002; pilgrimages take place there around the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians, in May. Visits can be arranged in advance at the nearby St. Joseph House.

The foundation stone of the stone Church of St. Henry in Staré Hamry was laid on July 12, 1863, and the church was completed two years later. The monument to Maryčka Magdónová, a cultural and historical monument, commemorates Petr Bezruč and his Silesian Songs.

The Gruň–Bílý Kříž educational trail begins at the Church of St. Henry in Staré Hamry and ends at the tripoint on the border between Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia. It presents the history of Staré Hamry and the construction of the Šance Reservoir.

Trails and Activities

The Ski Park Gruň in Staré Hamry has three slopes with a total length of 3.8 km, a two-seater chairlift, and two drag lifts. On the “Zadními horami na kole” route, most of the trail runs along paved roads; trekking or mountain bikes are recommended. In winter, this tour can also be undertaken on cross-country skis.

The Javořina–Němčanka–Samčanka educational trail is approximately 6.7 km long and, together with the Picture Trail, forms a circular route of approximately 9 km.

Getting Around

The Šance Information Centre offers personal guided tours for school classes, excursion groups, and interested visitors. It also provides information about the Šance waterworks and the Povodí Odry water management system through an interactive system of five touchscreens.

Bus connections to Staré Hamry are available from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí via Ostravice, as well as from Turzovka in Slovakia.
