The stone Church of St. Martin in Holice was built in the Baroque style from 1736 to 1739 according to plans by court architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.

Culture and History

The original Martin bell from 1499 has been preserved in the Church of St. Martin. The church interior also includes a main altar with a painting of Saint Martin, as well as stone and pewter baptismal fonts from the 16th century.

The Africké Muzeum Dr. Emila Holuba in Holice presents collections and the significant ethnographic work of Dr. Emil Holub. The exhibition focuses primarily on his life, expeditions and work, as well as the life, expeditions and work of his wife, Růžena Holubová.

West of the Church of St. Martin lies the former Holice fortress site, with the remains of a fortress dating from the mid-14th century. Square platforms with clearly recognisable corner bastions measuring approximately 13 metres in diameter have been preserved at the south-western and north-western corners; remains of the moat are also visible on the western side.

The Sokolovna is an architecturally significant building designed and planned by architect Otakar Novotný. Its foundation stone was laid in August 1912, and the ceremonial opening took place at the Sokol district festival in August 1913. Today, the building is used exclusively for sports by local schools and clubs.

Trails and Nature

The Od Holuba k Malichovi educational trail is 4.3 km long and takes approximately 90 minutes. It runs through easy terrain and is suitable for visitors of all ages, pedestrians and wheelchair users. The route ends near the starting point at the Základní umělecká škola Karla Malicha. In Holice, it combines architecture and history with the flora and fauna of the town park and contemporary art; the fighting during the May Uprising is also covered.

The Po stopách holického povstání route leads to interesting places associated with the Holice Uprising at the end of the Second World War.

The Městský park grounds on Smetanova Street were initiated on 26 March 1883 after František Holub senior presented a proposal to the general meeting of the Citizens' Savings Bank, which provided 873 guilders for the purpose. The site on the outskirts of the town was subsequently transformed into a picturesque, park-like natural area.
