Žilov is a place where history, theatre and routes through the surrounding area and further afield come together.

History and Culture

Žilov was founded around 1250 by Rupert of the Vladiken family of Bučí. The early manor house of Žilov was surrounded by walls and may also have included a fortified residence. Traditional folk architecture in Žilov and Stýskaly includes numerous gateways and walls decorated with sculptures of lions and Jan Kozina.

The first theatre performance in Žilov took place in 1886; a local amateur theatre group was established in 1946. In the past, open-air theatre performances and traditional Czech celebrations were held here, including “Nastolení Přemysla Oráče”, “Staročeská svatba”, “Dožínkové slavnosti”, dancing the “Česká beseda”, the “Oslava zrušení roboty” and the “Oslavy upálení Mistra Jana Husa”.

The “Divotvorná léta” event takes place at KD Žilov and is organised by Divadelní společnost Žilov. At the 2026 event, a scene featuring today’s amateur actors is part of the programme.

Routes and Events

The Vinná a pohádková stezka begins at the swimming pool in Stýskaly and continues as a nature walk with seven stations and tasks for children. Refreshments, music and attractions for children are available at the destination; children who successfully complete the route receive sausages to grill there.

A 20 km route of the Svatojakubská cesta – Železná leads through Krašovice, Trnová and Žilov and is suitable for visits to the destinations Nevřeňské podzemí, tvrziště Kokořovců and památné místo bitvy u Nekměře.

The public hiking day “Po Svatojakubské cestě za Kokořovci a Janem Žižkou” is being held for the fourth time. This edition includes hiking routes from 12 to 30 km with a visit to Nevřeňské podzemí.

Landscape and Surroundings

In the immediate vicinity of Žilov, Berdovna is a mountain. Špitál [Horní Bříza] and (Dubová mýť) [Horní Bříza] are hills there.

In the wider regional surroundings of Žilov are the church Plzen Barholomaeus Cathedral, the Novy Dvur monastery and the church Svatý Martin. Radyně is a mountain in this wider regional area.
