In the center of Smědčice, the archaeological site encompasses a village and fortress settlement dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The first mention of Smědčice dates from 1243 and names Abraham de Zmedcich.

Culture and history

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas occupies a prominent position in the middle of Smědčice village green. The small sacred building in the Romantic Eclectic style combines Gothic, Baroque, and Empire elements and is a protected immovable cultural monument.

Mentions of the fortress, which was probably founded only at the beginning of the 16th century, date from 1544 and 1550, and possibly also from 1553; by 1581, it was already uninhabited and in ruins. The burial mound cemetery of Smědčice is extensive and well preserved and ranks among the largest and most significant in the region.
