Staré Sedliště: Hotels and Accommodations

Staré Sedliště lies in a landscape characterized by numerous ponds and combines distinctive natural areas with a multifaceted local history. Between the chateau grounds, ecclesiastical buildings, historical traces, and wetlands, a concrete picture of the place emerges.

Culture and History

The late Baroque Staré Sedliště Chateau was built in 1792 by the glassmaker František Koler. Its grounds are an archaeological site with documented or well-founded suspected archaeological finds. Its older history also includes the medieval fortress on the chateau grounds, which was burned down during the Thirty Years’ War.

The Church of St. Prokop and St. Ulrich has a Gothic core but was fundamentally remodeled in the Baroque period. It is a valuable example of high-quality Baroque ecclesiastical architecture and has been preserved without significant later alterations. The church and cemetery grounds are surrounded by a historic enclosing wall that was built gradually during different periods. Remains of a vaulted Baroque bridge have also been preserved in Staré Sedliště. The surviving works of art include a valuable statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the early 18th century.

The local parish house is a restored Baroque building from the 18th century and a cultural monument. It can be used for family celebrations and smaller social events. At the same time, Staré Sedliště lost most of its historic buildings during the socialist era; extensive demolitions caused lasting damage to the historic appearance of the town.

The local economic and everyday history has also been preserved: juniper syrup was historically produced in Staré Sedliště and sold throughout Bohemia as well as in Saxony and Bavaria. The origins of the manorial brewery can be dated to around 1548.

Nature and Landscape

The Tisovské rybníky Nature Reserve protects a system of ponds and adjacent wetland ecosystems. It is one of the most important ornithological areas in the Plzeňský kraj and provides a breeding habitat for cranes.

Another natural area is the Mělký rybník Reserve. It lies approximately 1 kilometer east of the Staré Sedliště railway station, covers 27.9 hectares, and features reed beds as well as an important bird-breeding site. The Český les Nature Park is also listed as a protected area for Staré Sedliště.

Hiking and Cycling

A marked, 21-kilometer hiking route from Staré Sedliště is described as moderately difficult and not a loop trail. It begins at the Staré Sedliště railway stop and follows the green hiking trail markings toward Nové Sedliště.

For cycling, Cycle Route 2167 provides a 21-kilometer connection between Staré Sedliště and Planá.
