Strážov: Hotels and Accommodation

Strážov combines historic landmarks with a lace-making tradition and a variety of attractions in the surrounding area. The town can be explored through its townscape, religious and medieval sites, and its recreational and natural features.

Culture

The historic centre of Strážov has been designated an urban heritage zone since 2003 and has preserved its historic character. The lace-making tradition is also part of the town's history: on 15 October 1896, a lace-making school was ceremonially opened in Strážov. Today, this tradition is maintained by a lace-making group at the local primary school. The Krajkářská expozice also includes a small collection of newly made lace based on pattern templates by Emilie Mildeová–Paličková.

History

The early Gothic parish church of sv. Jiří in Strážov is first mentioned in the mid-14th century. It stands in the oldest district of Strážov, known as Hradčany. The church contains three altars: the main altar is dedicated to Saint George, while the two side altars are dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and the Fourteen Holy Helpers.

The Jewish cemetery lies about 1.5 kilometres from the centre of Strážov, on the slope of Smrková hora. It contains approximately two hundred gravestones, the oldest of which date from the first half of the 18th century.

Hrad Castle in Strážov is a medieval castle dating from the 14th century that was remodelled in the Renaissance style after the mid-16th century. A prismatic tower, as well as ditches and ramparts, remain from the original Gothic Hrad Castle. The chapel of sv. Anny was built on the site of a former castle; it is a small Baroque masonry chapel dating from the second half of the 18th century.

Leisure and Surroundings

The Koupaliště has a large pool and a children's pool, as well as two tennis courts. It is located about 1 kilometre from Strážov at a crossroads of popular cycling routes. The 34-kilometre excursion route “Opálka a Strážov” also passes through Strážov.

In 1994, a group of Strážov residents laid the foundations for regular monthly hikes in the Šumava region.

In the immediate vicinity of Strážov lies Úliště [Javor - Loučany], a mountain. Můstek, Javorná and Lovečná are mountains in the area around Strážov. The Bayerwald-Tierpark Lohberg, a zoo, is located in the wider region surrounding Strážov.
