Oslavany: Hotels and Accommodation
Oslavany combines evidence of Moravian monastic and castle history with memories of hard-coal mining, as well as nature and leisure experiences. The castle, its collections and several offerings for different age groups are at the centre of it all.
Culture and History
The Rosicko-Oslavansko Mining and Energy Museum presents almost 250 years of hard-coal mining history in the Rosicko-Oslavansko Basin. Its exhibition also includes a scale model of a mine tunnel with a mining locomotive.
The headframe of the KUKLA mine was built in 1910–1911 as one of the most modern mining structures in the Habsburg monarchy. In 2012, it reopened as a publicly accessible cultural monument with interactive content.
The Oslavany Firefighting Museum is located on the ground floor of the south wing of Oslavany Castle. It displays unique exhibits and documents; its collections also include hand-operated or steam-powered pumps that are more than 100 years old.
The Lapidarium at Oslavany Castle presents architectural fragments and stonework from the collections of the museum in Ivančice. Visitors can see gravestones of citizens of Ivančice, objects from the former Jewish quarter of Ivančice, and a fragment of the pillory column from Ivančice town square. The Lapidarium project opened another part of Oslavany Castle to the public for this purpose.
The Cistercian nunnery in Oslavany, Vallis sanctae Mariae, was the first Cistercian nunnery in Moravia. After the nunnery passed into secular ownership in 1525, it was converted into a Renaissance château. The Church of St Nicholas is Gothic in origin and was later remodelled in the Baroque style.
A few hundred metres from Oslavany Castle lies the restored educational trail about the Permocarboniferous created by RNDr. Lubomír Malý. The programme of the Oslavanské historické slavnosti includes a knights’ tournament and a historical craft market. The events commemorate the arrival of King Přemysl Otakar I and Queen Constance in Oslavany during the consecration of the Cistercian nunnery Údolí sv. Marie in 1228.
Nature and Leisure
Oslavany Castle Park offers opportunities for peaceful walks and relaxation. Numerous birds, bats and rare insects such as the hermit beetle can be found there.
Oslavany’s natural bathing biotope features a public bathing lake that is accessible for an admission fee during the bathing season. The bathing biotope also includes a children’s water area with paddling pools, water sprayers and a play fountain.
Permonium is a family leisure park in Oslavany that combines adventure, exercise, nature and stories from a former hard-coal mine. Duhový svět is a nature park with colourful play elements, water attractions and fairy-tale areas for children aged approximately 2 to 6.
Opening Hours and Parking
The Rosicko-Oslavansko Mining and Energy Museum is open to the public from May to September on weekends and selected important days. During the summer holidays, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
Visitor parking for Oslavany’s bathing biotope and the sports facilities in the castle gardens is available on Sportovní Street and on the grounds of the TJ Oslavany stadium.
