Velešovice between Sacred Buildings and Nature

Velešovice lies in the valley of the Rakovec stream, on its left bank. At 301 metres, Stará hora is the highest point in the cadastral area of Velešovice. These topographical reference points can be considered separately when planning a visit to the locality.

Biocentrum Vrchní rybník covers 12 hectares and includes a pond, a wetland and open ditches for supplying water. Since the biocentre was established, new animal and plant species have gradually returned to the area. The Church of St. Barbara is a High Baroque building dating from 1731–1732 and a significant landmark of Velešovice’s sacred district. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument.

The village-square chapel of St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1867 by residents of the municipality on the site of an earlier small chapel. The chapel complex includes an originally Neoclassical chapel and a Neoclassical statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1803.

Since 1993, Mass has been celebrated every year in the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk on 16 May, the feast day of Saint John of Nepomuk. The cultural topics can be arranged chronologically or by building and custom.
