Krupka: Hotels and Accommodation
Krupka combines the history of a medieval mining town with a well-preserved relic mining landscape. The townscape and surrounding area tell the story of tin mining, which has left its mark here over the course of centuries.
Mining and Landscape
The Krupka mining landscape is characterised by intensive tin mining and the remains of hundreds of mines dating from the 14th to the 20th century. It is considered the oldest tin-mining area in the Ore Mountains and contributed to the development and transfer of techniques for extracting tin ores in the Ore Mountains and Central Europe.
This history is particularly vividly illustrated in the Steinknochen mining district. Numerous remains of historical mining have been preserved there, including collapsed shaft and adit entrances as well as distinctive terraced spoil heaps. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 19th century, more than 150 tin mines were in operation in this district.
Culture and Buildings
Numerous valuable ecclesiastical and secular buildings have been preserved in the medieval mining town of Krupka, particularly from the 14th to the 17th century. Among the town’s notable historic sites is Krupka Castle, which was built at the beginning of the 14th century as a fortified watchtower. It was intended to protect the trade route to Saxony, the tin mines and the developing town.
The castle has an observation tower offering panoramic views of Krupka and Teplice. The castle grounds are freely accessible year-round. Another religious attraction is the Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady. It is surrounded by cloisters with seven chapels and features an elaborate Baroque interior.
The Krupka Firefighting Museum is located in the restored Baroque parish house. Historical firefighting technology, as well as historical equipment and gear, is displayed in eight themed exhibition rooms.
Museums and Education
The Starý Martin adit operates year-round as a mining museum with a permanent exhibition of historical and modern mining technology. Minerals, miners’ lamps, respirators and work tools are also on display.
The Krupka Toy Museum features interactive elements: visitors can try out some of the toys or take part in creative activities. The educational programme “Krupka – hlavní město cínu” takes place in Krupka’s authentic historic setting. It includes group tasks and presentations on the society and architecture of the mining town, as well as tin ore extraction.
At the Wolfgang Chapel, a guide welcomes visitors and provides information about the past and present. An exhibition there presents the Krupka mining landscape as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Routes and Information
The cable car from Bohosudov to Komáří vížka is the oldest passenger aerial tramway still in operation in the Czech Republic. From Bohosudov railway station, a 4.3 km hiking route leads to Kyšperk. A blue-marked tourist route also runs from Komáří vížka via Fojtovice to the state border with Germany.
The current access restrictions for Kyšperk should be noted in particular: The entire area of the castle ruin is prohibited until further notice due to falling masonry.
