Culture

The Church of St. James is an 18th-century Baroque church built on the site of an older predecessor. In front of its west portal stand statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Augustine dating from 1773. The bell tower has a sundial on its south side and the dial of a mechanical clock on its east side.

Veliká Ves Château was built by the Augustinians of Karlov between 1662 and 1762 as the provost's summer residence. Between 1890 and 1896, it was rebuilt in the Pseudo-Renaissance style. The château's former farmyard is now used for agritourism and various social events.

History

Archaeological finds in the cadastral area of Veliká Ves attest to settlement during large parts of prehistory and the early historical period. The sand pit west of Veliká Ves yielded the greatest concentration of archaeological finds; advance archaeological rescue excavations were carried out there in 1974 and 1975.

The former cemetery gate dating from 1678 was converted into a war memorial. The history of the village also includes hop cultivation: hops were already grown in Veliká Ves at that time. The St. James Pilgrimage took place in Veliká Ves in 2006 and every year from 2015 to 2022.

Landscape and Location

Veliká Ves lies above the confluence of the Dubá and Leská streams. The Dubá stream flows through Veliká Ves and feeds two ponds on the village square, one on each side of the road. In the past, the stream powered a mill in Veliká Ves.

A local road from Chotěbudice connects Veliká Ves with the Kadaň–Podbořany state road.
