Vrskmaň lies about 6 km northeast of Chomutov, on the edge of the mining area of the Vršany open-pit mine. The first written mention of the village dates from 1417.

History

The history of Vrskmaň includes several surviving and documented landmarks. The former Neo-Gothic chapel dated from 1898, had been built on the site of an older Baroque chapel from 1776, and was demolished between 1972 and 1974. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1886 has been preserved. At the southern edge of the village square stands a Marian column with a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1887.

At the crossroads in front of House No. 4, there were three reconciliation crosses and a large Baroque cross with a sculpture of Christ dating from 1731. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk and this group of crosses were moved to Vrskmaň from the vanished village of Kyjice.

Herrova Villa is a valuable historic property. The years 1862 and 1900 are displayed on its main façade; a sandstone balcony is located above the passageway to its square courtyard.

Landscape and Geology

The former Karel lignite mine, also known as Bedřich, was located west of Vrskmaň. It operated from the transition between the 1850s and 1860s until 1885.

A geopark with examples of North Bohemian rocks is located in the northern part of Vrskmaň. The exhibition also includes finds from the quarry at Dobkovičky and from the Bohemian Central Uplands. The geological park in the village park was established to display rocks and minerals from nearby mines.

Activities

Benders Arena is a covered ice rink with an area of approximately 300 m² and offers individual training for hockey players and figure skaters.

A cycle path runs along the trackbed of a disused railway line, following cycle route 3114 from Chomutov towards Zaječice. Cycle route 3106 connects Vrskmaň with Vysoká Pec via the dam of the Újezd Reservoir and continues from there to Jezeří.

Transport and Events

Vrskmaň is served by public buses as part of the Integrated Transport System of the Ústí nad Labem Region. Regular bus connections operate to Chomutov and Jirkov.

The harvest festival organized by the Municipality of Vrskmaň offers, among other things, the opportunity to view agricultural machinery. The municipality also organizes summer open-air cinema screenings for children and adults.
