Culture and History

Zámek Litenčice château is a two-storey, four-wing complex. Its present appearance was created through Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical alterations to a Gothic fortress; it has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The château is not open to the public.

The Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla Church is one of Litenčice’s most important sights and dates from around 1700. It has four altars, including the main altar dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The last renovation took place from 1740 to 1760. The church is registered as a cultural monument. Its grounds also contain a stone Baroque crucifix dating from 1757.

The preserved monuments of Litenčice also include the Kaple Panny Marie Chapel. Archaeological investigations on the Obecnice hill uncovered 153 graves dating from the period of the Great Moravian Empire.

Nature and Geological Features

Next to the Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla Church in Litenčice stands the Jilm v Litenčicích elm, protected as a natural monument. Another distinctive feature is the Litenčice geological site: it is a former sand quarry with Carpathian delta sands containing numerous fragments of macrofauna.

Because of a unique exposure in Carpathian sands and the breeding colony of European bee-eaters, the site is registered as a geological locality recommended for protection. At the same time, it is designated as a geotourism attraction and an excursion site. Access is possible only with special permission because the site is located in a military area, a quarry or on private property.

Cycling Routes in the Litenčická pahorkatina Hills

The Litenčické cyklotrasy form a network of signposted local cycling routes. It connects municipalities and noteworthy places in the gently rolling terrain of the Litenčická pahorkatina hills. The network comprises four circular routes with a total length of approximately 180 km.

The Velký Litenčický okruh route runs through the centre of the Litenčická pahorkatina hills. It connects Vyškov in the western part of the region with Morkovice-Slížany in the east.

Winegrowing and Events

Zámek Litenčice château had vineyards as early as the 16th century. There is also a Renaissance wine cellar beneath the château. On a favourably oriented slope, the Podstatzští Thonsern family planted a vineyard with several grape varieties; these vineyards also belonged to Zámek Litenčice château.

Cultural events held in Litenčice included a myslivecký ples, or hunters’ ball, as well as the Únorový sokolský karneval, a February carnival organised by the Sokol association.

Location and Road Connections

Litenčice is a transport hub. Here, a second-class road from Prostějov to Kyjov meets a third-class road between Kroměříž and Litenčice.
