Velehrad: Basilica, Pilgrimage and Hotels

The Cistercian routes through the landscape include an easy route measuring 4.2 kilometres and a difficult route measuring 9.9 kilometres. Among other places, they lead to a former mill and farmstead, across a Baroque bridge and along the medieval paved Háje Way.

Velehrad is also a hub for cycle paths and cycling routes at the foot of the Chřiby Mountains. The Velehrad Tourist Centre has bicycle facilities with tools and some spare parts, as well as a rental service for sports kick scooters. This means that, in addition to the routes through the landscape, there are also facilities for different forms of transport.

The “Velehradská hledačka” runs around the basilica; it is an easy route of approximately 1.5 kilometres and starts at the Velehrad Information Centre. A second “Velehradská hledačka” is a physically undemanding route measuring 3.8 kilometres. The Háj educational trail offers interactive tasks, audio stories via QR codes and a rest pavilion along a two-kilometre forest loop.

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saints Cyril and Methodius was originally a Late Romanesque building from the first third of the 13th century. After suffering war damage, particularly in the fire of 1681, it acquired its Baroque appearance.

During a guided tour of the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saints Cyril and Methodius, visitors see the main nave and side chapels. The interactive exhibition “The Bible for Young and Old” includes tactile elements and tasks on touchscreens.

The exhibition “Velehrad at the Crossroads of European History” is located in the rooms of the former medieval convent, which lies below the present ground level, in the Baroque crypts of the basilica and in the Velehrad House of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The basement of the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saints Cyril and Methodius also contains a sacred site commemorating Christian martyrs of the 20th century; it houses a gallery of witnesses to the faith of our time.
