Omalo: Hotels and Accommodation
Omalo is the center of Tusheti, a protected mountain landscape with alpine meadows, birch and pine forests, glacial lakes, mineral springs, and rivers rich in trout. Planning a trip to Omalo may also include the desire to find a hotel.
Culture and History
Omalo is divided into Upper Omalo, Keselo Castle, and Lower Omalo. Old Omalo is listed in Georgia's register of intangible cultural heritage monuments of national significance and was built near Keselo Castle in the 18th century. The Omalo Ethnographic Museum is housed and operates in Keselo Fortress. Tushetoba has been celebrated annually in Omalo since 1970 in July or August and is associated with sheep farming. Omalo is also home to a visitor center for the protected areas.
Nature and Travel
The journey from Kvemo Alvani to Omalo is possible exclusively by off-road vehicle. The difficult road through the Abano Pass to Tusheti takes at least four hours by 4WD vehicle. The road over the Abano Pass is generally open from the end of May to October and closed for six months due to heavy snowfall. For the road through the Abano Pass to Tusheti, the period from the end of May to September is generally considered the opening period; outside this period, it is closed due to heavy snowfall. There are three outlets in Omalo where mineral water flows naturally.
Hiking
The Tusheti Protected Areas offer 11 trails lasting between one and six days, as well as hiking tours. The Omalo-Atsunta-Shatili route starts in Omalo and initially follows a forest path toward Ghele Pass before descending into the Alazani Valley and reaching Dartlo. The route from Omalo to Jvarboseli is 22.5 kilometers long and may include a hiking trail over Ghele Pass, Mount Gogorata, and the Makratela Range.
Cuisine
The traditional production of guda cheese begins in summer with the milking of sheep. Kagi is made by salting and sun-drying sheep, beef, goat, or game meat.
