Kunešov: Culture, Nature and Hotels in Slovakia

Kunešov is located in the western part of the Kremnické vrchy mountains on the Kunešovská planina plateau. At the same time, the village lies in the headwaters of the Kopernica stream. Kunešov is a settlement originally established by Germans. The first written mention of Kunešov appeared under the name villa Sankt Michaelis. In 1912, a state lace-making school was founded in Kunešov.

Culture and History

The Church of the Archangel Michael is an originally Gothic single-nave building dating from around 1400. It was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1766. In the Central Register of the Monument Fund of Slovakia, the church is registered as a national cultural monument under number 1244/0. A memorial plaque in the Church of the Archangel Michael in Kunešov names 63 residents of Kunešov who were shot at Magurka during the Second World War.

At the southern edge of Kunešov stands a late Classicist wayside chapel from the second half of the 19th century. Before Kunešov, at the entrance to Kremnické Bane, there is also a small square chapel.

Nature and Trails

Kunešov offers opportunities for active recreation in nature and for hiking. The ascent to Bralová rock can begin in Kunešov. The long-distance Cesta hrdinov SNP trail passes through Kunešov along the road to Kremnické Bane. The 17 km Kremnica section of the long-distance trail runs from Sedlo pod Vysokou on the western side above Kunešov into the Kremnica section.

Cycling Routes

One cycling route leads from Kremnica via Kopernica and Kunešov back to Kremnica. Another 38.5 km cycling route leads from Kremnica via Kremnické Bane, Kunešov, Slaská, Kopernica and Lúčky back to Kremnica; it involves an elevation gain of 618 metres. Both routes list Kunešov as part of a loop with Kremnica as the starting and finishing point.
