Bystrá: Caves, Culture and Hotels

Nature

The Bystrianska Cave is known for its remarkable rock formations, the development of its underground chambers and its sinter formations. It is designated as an accessible cave and a national natural monument. The municipality of Bystrá has two accessible caves: the Bystrianska Cave and the Cave of the Dead Bats.

Caves and Trails

The sightseeing route in the Bystrianska Cave is 580 m long, runs almost entirely without any change in elevation and takes 45 minutes; it includes 26 steps in total. The entrance is about 120 m from the car park and can be reached with only a slight change in elevation. This makes specific measurements and a clearly described route the focus of this cave, alongside its underground natural features.

The Cave of the Dead Bats involves a different approach: it is not possible to drive to the entrance hut, followed by a 90-minute ascent along a marked hiking trail. With a guide, the cave offers tourist Route A for children aged eight and over, as well as more demanding speleotrekking routes of difficulty levels B and C.

Culture

The church in Bystrá is also one of the village’s notable cultural sites. Its altars and pulpit are Neo-Gothic. The church was completed in 1915 and consecrated on 17 September 1916.

At a bridge on the right bank of the Bystrianka stands the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, between two lime trees. It was built in 1836 using fines paid by the workers of the Bystrá hammer mills. The “Tradičná drevenica – V krojoch a príbehoch” exhibition in Bystrá also adds a regional historical dimension. It offers insights into the lives of ancestors, customs and impressive personal stories. Traditional costumes from Heľpa, Polomka and Pohorelá are on display. During your visit, you can also learn about a traditional wedding from the Horehronie region, as well as the former daily life and household skills once commonly practised.

Further Experiences

Kolkáreň Bystrá is a modern skittles alley with two lanes in the heart of the Low Tatras. Advance telephone booking is required for Kolkáreň. The Zuna Amphitheatre in Bystrá is located next to the car park by the Bystrianska Cave.

For the night of 20 to 21 March 2026, the second edition of the “Extrémna Krížová Cesta” was announced as a silent pilgrimage; its route was also to pass through Bystrá. Around 100 participants were expected to move in small groups through Bystrá along paths and road edges, using headlamps or other lights and observing the traffic regulations.

Visitor Information

The modern Horehronie Infocentre is located directly at the car park by the Bystrianska Cave, near the Zuna Amphitheatre. It offers comprehensive tourist information, a quiet zone, toilets and a fully equipped service area for visitors of all ages. The “Tradičná drevenica – V krojoch a príbehoch” exhibition is 150 m from the Horehronie Infocentre, at the car park by the Bystrianska Cave. Advance registration is required to visit it, and admission is charged.
