Brezno: Urban Culture and Mining History in Slovakia – Hotels

The rectangular Námestie gen. M. R. Štefánika in Brezno measures 213 × 146 metres and is unusually large for Slovakia. Due to its significant cultural and historical value, the square has been designated a heritage conservation zone. The urban surroundings also include Brezno City Park, the only historic city park in upper Pohronie and a national cultural monument at the same time.

Culture

The Piarist Monastery in Brezno was built between 1694 and 1713. The chapel of the former Piarist Monastery houses Brezno’s oldest altarpiece: a panel painting of Saint Barbara from a late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from the late 15th century. The chapel also houses Brezno’s oldest movable monument, a polychrome wooden carving of the Madonna and Child from the late 15th century.

Brezno Synagogue has an elegant octagonal tower with an onion-shaped roof and was consecrated in 1902. The city’s historical heritage also includes “Brezno v premenách času”, a permanent historical exhibition of the Horehronské múzeum.

History

The foundation stone of Brezno’s town tower was laid in 1830. The tower served as a bell tower and watchtower and now houses an exhibition about Milan Rastislav Štefánik, a period-furnished apartment of the bell-ringer and a viewing point offering a bird’s-eye view of the city.

At Námestie gen. Štefánika, the “Nostalgia” exhibition is located at Gate No. 2. It explores the socialist era through thematic images, panels and educational elements. The exhibition also includes the interactive game “Ako sa žilo v časoch nie tak dávnych” in a period-furnished apartment.

The Horehronské múzeum presents exhibitions in three historic buildings directly on Brezno’s main square, covering the region’s way of life and culture, the history of the city and an exhibition dedicated to the memory of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. It also includes a historic apartment of the bell-ringer.

Experiences

Svet Ilúzií offers interactive fantasy rooms based on discovery, playful experiences and altered perceptions of objects. The attractions also include an interactive underground area inspired by the mining history of the Horehronie region.

A rare wooden folk mangle from the first half of the 19th century is located in a typical craftsman’s and farmer’s house of a blue-dye printer at 20 Rázusova Street in Brezno. The house and the folk mangle are accessible through the Horehronské múzeum.

The Náučný banský chodník in Brezno is approximately 6 km long, includes 12 stations and takes about 2 to 3 hours. It passes old mining and ironworks sites within the city.

Nature

In the Banisko district of Brezno, there is an enclosure with fallow deer, mouflon and red deer. Visitors can observe, photograph and feed the animals there. Next to it are a historic orchard serving as an arboretum and a recreation area. Interactive educational panels provide information about the animals and trees of the surrounding forests.

During the summer season, a tourist train runs through the streets of Brezno and the immediate surrounding area. The climb to the final station of the Stations of the Cross near Brezno is easy, takes approximately 20 minutes and offers a beautiful view of the city.
