Vaľkovňa between Industrial Culture and Protected Nature
Vaľkovňa introduces several different themes: its location in the Hron Valley, the history of an industrial settlement, sacred architecture and protected natural areas. These individual aspects complement one another without being limited to a single defining feature of the town.
Location
Vaľkovňa lies in the Hron Valley on both sides of the Hron River along the main route between Brezno and Červená Skala. The town’s location in the valley and by the river provides the geographical framework for the further historical and landscape-related aspects.
Nature
The Zlatnianske skalky nature reserve, designated in 1981, is located near Vaľkovňa. It protects preserved natural forests with relict features, as well as important and rare plant and animal species. The cadastral area of Vaľkovňa also forms part of Muránska planina National Park. This records both a specifically named protected area in the nearby surroundings and the cadastral area’s inclusion in a national park.
History
The centrepiece of the industrial settlement of Vaľkovňa was a rolling mill for rails built between 1834 and 1836. The rolling mill in Vaľkovňa ceased operations in 1889 because the flow from the streams was insufficient for its operation. Both details are directly connected to the industrial history of the town: they identify both the establishment of the central facility and the reason and year it ended.
Culture
The Evangelical church in Vaľkovňa was built in 1904 and is a Neo-Gothic architectural landmark of Vaľkovňa. Its interior has been preserved with historic furnishings and the original organ. The church building thus combines its construction period and architectural classification with preserved elements of its interior furnishings.
Cycling
The Šumiac–Vaľkovňa–Zlatno cycle circuit runs as far as Nová Maša, a district of Vaľkovňa. There it crosses Main Road No. 66 and joins green cycle route No. 5581 at the foot of Gindura Hill. Nová Maša also has its own historical connection: the ruins of Ferdinandova huta are located there. The place name, the road crossing, the connection point at the hill and the two cycle routes mentioned all form part of the described route.
