Discover Michalová: Cultural History and Nature

Michalová lies in a foothill area of the Brezno Basin in the valley of the Rohozná stream. The inhabited area extends between 585 and 1,195 metres above sea level. The landscape, technical history and sacred sites shape the municipality’s diverse character.

Culture

A nature trail with six information panels connects the area around the church, the Luštiareň, the cultural centre and Hrable Street. The Luštiareň is a national cultural monument and a technical heritage site. It was used to obtain seeds from cones for forest nurseries and reforestation.

The Calvary in Michalová includes a chapel whose construction began in 2013. In 2014, a Way of the Cross with large stones and bronze plaques for the individual stations was created there. The parish church of Kostol sv. Štefana Uhorského was completed in 1897; material from the former blast furnace was used in its construction. The main altar features a painting of Saint Stephen of Hungary, painted in Budapest in 1896 by Linhard Vilmos.

Iron processing is also part of Michalová’s history. A blast furnace was built here in 1795. The mining and processing of iron ore continued until 1877; that year, the blast furnace was dismantled because of a lack of ore.

Nature

The Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve lies in the vicinity of Michalová, along the road from Michalová to Brezno. The protected area is subject to the fifth level of protection and is important because of its scientific, educational and cultural-educational significance. The protected Rohoznianska jelšina is also an example of rare mountain alder stands of priority habitat type 91E0 at an elevation of approximately 570 metres.

Cycle Paths

The 30-kilometre “Okolo Michalovej na Kabátovú” cycle route passes through Michalová and then continues along the Rohoznianska jelšina nature reserve. Another route named “Sedlo Burda – Krátke – Bujakovo” leads via Michalová Brest and continues through the village square and Hrable in Michalová.

Railway

A railway line runs through Michalová from Brezno via Hálny to Polhorská Polhora. Beyond that point, it becomes a cog railway that runs through extensive coniferous forests to Tisovec.

Events

Dni obce Michalová is a recurring public community festival. The municipality announced the 14th edition for 15 and 16 August 2026. Family-oriented public programme items include food, music, markets and exhibitions. At one celebration, visitors learned about the history of local handicrafts and watched local artisans make wood carvings.

The Silvestrovský beh in Michalová is a recurring public race; the 25th edition was announced for 2023. The Jarný lesný beh is also a recurring public race, and its 12th edition had been announced for 30 May 2026.
