Horná Lehota – Find a hotel near Hrádok and in the Low Tatras

Horná Lehota lies at an altitude of 640 metres below the Ďumbier ridge in the Low Tatras mountain range. The municipality also includes the cadastral area of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 protected area. Coniferous forest habitats predominate there, complemented by meadows and pastures. The landscape and the history of the town are closely intertwined here.

Culture

A notable historic site is Hrádok near Horná Lehota. The hillfort is protected on three sides by ramparts and on its northwestern side by a rocky cliff. Hrádok is also a protected cultural monument. The site served as a settlement and trading centre and was part of the system of hillforts in Horehronie.

The sacred heritage includes the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. It is a Baroque church from the second half of the 17th century and is considered a national cultural monument. Next to it stands the Evangelical Church of Horná Lehota, a Neoclassical building from 1845 that was restored after a fire in 1872. The bell tower has a wooden structure dating from 1789.

The name of the poet and pastor Samo Chalupka is also associated with Horná Lehota. He was born here and worked as an Evangelical pastor in Horná Lehota from 1840 until his death. The Samo Chalupka Memorial Room is located in a former Evangelical school building. It contains ethnographic material about the lives of the inhabitants of Horná Lehota and its surroundings, as well as materials about the life and work of Samo Chalupka. Advance registration by telephone is required for a visit; the minimum group size is five people.

Nature

The landscape around Horná Lehota is shaped by its location below the Ďumbier ridge and by the habitats of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 area. Coniferous forests, meadows and pastures form the landscape elements identified in the protected area. At the same time, the natural environment remains connected with the historic sites in the municipality.

Paths and experiences

A nature trail leads from Horná Lehota to Hrádok. The “Kelti na Horehroní” educational trail from Horná Lehota to Hrádok is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and can begin at the “Kelti na Horehroní” exhibition in the centre of Horná Lehota. The route leads from the town to the historic destination of Hrádok.

Another form of local interpretation is offered by the “Prdimuch” escape room. It draws on the local vampire legend and presents it in a cinema room through an audiovisual display. The “Upírska noc” event also takes place in Horná Lehota in summer. An edition called “Upírska svetlá noc” has been announced for 1 August 2026.

A cycling route to the Vajskovský Waterfall also begins in Horná Lehota. It follows a moderate ascent on an asphalt road to the spring of Samo Chalupka.
